Since April, 2007, the bodies of 345 service personnel killed in Afghanistan and repatriated to nearby RAF Lyneham have passed through our Town on the way to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
On no less than 167 occasions, numerous people from our Town and further afield have lined our High Street to honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. They have stood alongside the families and friends of those who have lost their lives, as a token of support for those who grieve.
Our Church Administrator has been notified by the Town Council of the dates of all repatriations and he in turn passed on the details to members of the church so they too could join those who honoured our war-dead.
On Wednesday 31 August, 2011, a short service took place in our High Street to mark the end of repatriations through Wootton Bassett. The flag adjacent to the War Memorial was lowered for the very last time and handed to the people of Brize Norton who will assume the responsibility of saluting our fallen heroes from 1 September. From that date repatriated service personnel will be flown to the neighbouring RAF base in Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, in view of the impending closure of RAF Lyneham. The town of Carterton, near Brize Norton, will continue the tradition started in our Town with the creation of a special area where grieving families and local people can pay their respects as each cortege passes by.
The last and 167th repatriation through our Town took place on 18 August, 2011, when the body of 24 year old Lt. Daniel Clack, 1st Battalion The Rifles, was returned to the UK.
Although the final curtain has fallen on repatriations through our Town, our monthly prayer diary will continue to detail the names of those who have died in Afghanistan so that our church members can continue to pray for the families and friends of those who have fallen and for those who are still serving on the front-line. We will continue to pray for the many wounded servicemen receiving treatment and for those who care for them. We will continue to pray for the Christian Padres who serve alongside the members of the Armed Forces and MOD civilians and their work and Christian witness. We will continue to pray for peace to come to the troubled nation of Afghanistan.
We invite those who are reading this web-page to join with us in prayer and intercession. Below are the names and other details of those who have died in Afghanistan during the period August, 2009, to the present day. This church will continue to provide details of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, those who have paid the highest price. Please pray with us for the families and friends of:
